Introduction

The DSR-1 is a modern bolt-action sniper rifle of German origin. It was developed in the late 1990's as a highly accurate and compact weapon for law enforcement and military use. The DSR-1 is reputed to provide superb quality and performance at a high production cost.

Design

The DSR-1 is a futuristic looking weapon with a bullpup design. The receiver houses the bolt action mechanism. It also functions as a buttstock and features an adjustable cheekpiece and monopod. The free floating barrel is encased by a shroud that doubles as an accessory rail. A top mounted bipod or conventional bipod may be fitted. The Picatinny rail allows a variety of optical sights to be fitted, including a night vision sight in front of the telescopic sight. A clip on suppressor can be fitted over the slotted muzzle brake.

Firepower

The DSR-1 is chambered in various calibers and feeds from a 5 or 4 round detachable box magazine. The effective range is quoted as 800 meters for the 7.62x51mm NATO model, 1.100 meters for .300 Winchester Magnum and 1.500 meters for .338 Lapua Magnum. Accuracy is reported to be sub 0.2 MOA at 100 meters and sub MOA at 1 km for the .338 model. The DSR-50 anti-materiel variant is chambered for the 12.7x99mm NATO round and feeds from a 3 round magazine.

Users

The DSR-1 is used by various law enforcement and military units in the world, albeit in limited quantity.

Variants

DSR-1

The DSR-1 is a modern bullpup sniper rifle. It has distinctive looks with its bullpup layout, spare magazine holder in front of the pistol grip and slotted barrel shroud. Conversion kits for other calibers are available, but not very common.

The DSR-1 is produced in a number of variants:
DSR-1 in .338: The orignal DSR-1 is chambered for the .338 Lapua Magnum round. The .338 model has a longer barrel and the magazine holds 4 instead of 5 rounds.
DSR-1 in .308: Most common DSR-1 model. Chambered for the 7.62x51mm round, feeds from a 5 round detachable box magazine. A suppressor can be fitted instead of the muzzle brake.
DSR-1 in .300: A DSR-1 chambered for the .300 Winchester Magnum round, otherwise similar to the 7.62x51mm model.

DSR-1 Subsonic

The DSR-1 Subsonic is a special version of the DSR-1 with integral silencer. A unique feature is that the silencer is attached to the receiver, not the free floating barrel. Compared to the baseline model it has a much reduced sound signature, even when the baseline model is fitted with a suppressor. The short barrel and full length silencer reduce bullet speed below the speed of sound. The subsonic bullet speed results in a much reduced effective range.

DSR-50

The DSR-50 is an upscaled DSR-1 that serves as an anti-materiel rifle. It is chambered for the much larger 12.7x99mm NATO round, also known as the .50 BMG. The DSR-50 retains the overall design of the DSR-1, but has several features to accomodate the heavier round. The thicker and longer barrel is fitted with a large muzzle brake. This does not only reduce the recoil and muzzle flash, but also reduces the sound signature. Optionally, a suppressor can be fitted instead. A hydraulic buffer is located in the buttstock in order to reduce the felt recoil. The single stack magazines holds three rounds.
